You've got to think about all the things you like and decide whether they're worth sticking around for.

Filled out by my boyfriend- I just want to post this for people who don’t know what the hours are like working in film, or why IATSE is currently voting to strike. The hours on this aren’t even uncommon, frankly. It’s dangerous, it puts people out on the road with minimal sleep, it means sacrificing your health for a gig that will try to pay you as little as they can get away with, it means missing meaningful time with your loved ones. Film can be a wonderful, fun, exciting place to work, and it’s an industry I’d love to have more experience in, but as it stands now, crew are expected to treat the work like they have no life outside of it. People are given ridiculous hours and turnaround times, not given proper lunch breaks, etc. And told by producers to be greatful that they’re working at all. This isn’t even to mention the common occurances of safety on set being ignored, crew being put in physically dangerous situations, sometimes even resulting in (easily preventable) traumatic death, all to cut costs and make more money in what is already a multi-billion dollar industry. Film is an art form that means a lot to many people, but by no means is it ever necessary to sacrifice the health and safety of workers just to save money on a fucking movie. Because, as much as I love movies and television, that’s all they are. Movies and television. They are not worth this, nothing is.

For reference of those who don’t know; Call time is when you arrive on set. Wrap time is when you leave. Turnaround is the entire amount of time that you have to drive home, sleep, eat, take care of basic hygine needs, and drive back to set. That can also include the time needed to make meals for yourself, if they aren’t provided on set. Standard days last 12-16 hours. Turnaround time can typically be about 8 hours, and that is regardless of how far your commute is.
